'99 Homes' Starring Andrew Garfield Gets US Distribution

99 Homes, starring Andrew Garfield and Michael Shannon has officially been bought for distribution by Broad Green Pictures.

The drama, about a man (Garfield) who is evicted his home and ends up working for the real estate broker (Shannon) who kicked him out.

Inspired by the recent housing crisis and economic collapse, director Ramin Bahrani wrote the film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival before being featured at both Telluride and Toronto. Bahrani, known for Man Push Cart and At Any Price, described the movie as “a deal with the devil film, a thriller.”

The film received good reviews from critics after its Venice premiere, with many commenting on the cruel, visceral nature of the film. Indiewire’s Jessica Kiang called the film a “ferocious foreclosure drama,” and another reviewer said that, though the story may be familiar, “rarely has it been quite so cruelly presented.”

The cast, which includes Laura Dern and young actor Noah Lomax, also received rave reviews for their performances. “Ensemble work is excellent across the board, with those cast as the various evictees contributing a particularly vivid gallery of one-scene performances, ranging in tone from white-hot fury to silent desolation,” wrote Guy Lodge for Variety.

99 Homes was reportedly sold for around $3 million, and Broad Green Pictures will release the film in Spring of 2015.
