Lady Gaga Defends SXSW Vomit Performance On 'Today'
Lady Gaga dismissed the controversy surrounding her SXSW performance, which featured performance artist, Millie Brown regurgitating colored liquid over the singer, during her appearance on Today.
Gaga’s performance in Austin immediately grabbed headlines, and while many were taken back by the vomit performance simply due to the cringe factor, others were angry at Gaga for glamorizing an unhealthy practice, including, but not limited to, bulimia.
Lady Gaga Defends SXSW Performance On 'Today'
When asked vaguely about the controversy by Today anchor Savannah Guthrie, Gaga brushed it off, insisting that her collaboration was art.
“I guess we weren’t completely surprised [by the controversy]. Millie and I know that not everybody’s going to love that performance. But we both really believe in artistic expression and strong identities. I support her and what she does. Artpop, my new album, is about bringing art and music together and the spirit of creative rebellion. For us, that performance was art in its purest form. But we totally understand that some people won’t be into it,” Gaga said.
Furthermore, she said, the nature of the performance was specifically crafted for the small club SXSW performance and aimed at a specific kind of audience.
“Either way, we don’t make things for any intention in particular other than in the spirit of entertaining the crowd and creating something that is really for the moment. It wasn’t meant for the Today show. It was meant for a club performance in Austin, and we had a great time,” the singer added.

Demi Lovato Accuses Lady Gaga Of Glamorizing Bulimia
One the most vocal critics of Gaga’s performance has been fellow pop star Demi Lovato. After news of Gaga’s vomit performance spread, Lovato took to Twitter to express her disappointment in the singer, accusing her of “glamorizing [eating] disorders.”
Sad… As if we didn't have enough people glamorizing eat disorders already.
