Director Malik Bendjelloul Wins Oscar For 'Searching For Sugarman,' About Musician Rodriguez

Searching for Sugarman, directed by Swedish/British director Malik Bendjelloul (pictured), took home the Oscar Best Documentary on Sunday night.

The film follows the efforts of Stephen "Sugar" Segerman and Craig Bartholowmew to find out if the American musician Rodriguez was, in fact, still alive, having disappeared after his two 1970s albums came out, only to garner an unexpected cult following in South Africa. The documentary is structured as a mystery, not letting viewers in on the secret until halfway through the film.

When producer Simon Chinn took the stage to accept the award, he gave the game away, however, revealing that Rodriguez declined his invitation to the Oscars because he didn't want to take attention away from the filmmakers in the event that they won. "That just about says everything about that man and his story that you want to know," Chinn said.

"Thanks to one of the greatest singers ever, Rodriguez," said Bendjelloul.
