Tina Fey And Amy Poehler Prepare For The Golden Globes

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are getting ready to host the Golden Globe Awards for the second time on Sunday, Jan. 12, and spoke about the pressures that come with hosting a big awards show.

Fey and Poehler took over hosting duties from controversial host Ricky Gervais, who stopped hosting amidst rumors that he had been deemed too cruel by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Fey and Poehler charmed audiences, receiving rave reviews for their performances and bringing in a 17% increase in the ratings. Now the pressure is on for Fey and Poehler to deliver once again on Sunday night.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Fey and Poehler talked pressure, fashion and writing the show.

Reacting to the suggestion that this year’s awards ceremony would be the highest-rated ever, Fey dismissed the comment, saying, “For like 30 seconds. And then the camera is going to pan in a little bit and it’s going to be a zero.”

Gervais’ performance as host of the Golden Globes (see above) angered many, celebrities and viewers alike, particularly his choice to mock many of the members of his audience. In contrast, Fey and Poehler barely ruffled any feathers, save one harmless joke about Taylor Swift that reportedly offended the young singer.

When asked whether or not the HFPA had specifically instructed them not to be mean in their bits, both Poehler and Fey insisted that the HFPA did not make any efforts to censor their writing.

“But we’re not mean. That’s not really our thing. When you host a show you have to hopefully be funny at the top and set the tone for a really fun evening. When we did do it, it felt like it was pretty organic and there wasn’t a lot of stress from the HFPA about what we were going to do,” Poehler explains.

The hosting duo admitted that not much would be off limits during the show, but they gave nothing away as to what topics they are planning to cover on Sunday night. In the interview, Fey touched on the fact that all of the women nominated for Best Actress in a Drama are over the age of 35, saying, “We’ll write some jokes about that for the thing. I think you’re going to see a lot of gowns with sleeves – cap sleeves, ballerina sleeves.”

If you can’t wait until Sunday to see these funny ladies in action, here’s their opening monologue from 2013 to satisfy you until then.

The 2014 Golden Globe Awards will air live Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC.
