Helmut Lang is back. One of the biggest brands of the '80s and '90s, the label had not produced a catwalk show since 2006, when, after a six-year downward slump and the departure of Lang himself, it was sold to Link Theory Holdings. Since moving to Theory and getting rebuilt by Michael and Nicole Colovos, Helmut Lang has been inching its way back up the ladder to beloved luxury brand. The journey reached symbolic heights on Saturday when the brand debuts its first runway show in five years at New York Fashion Week to largely enthusiastic reviews.
Set against an industrial backdrop at Pier 57 on Manhattan's far West Side, the show featured designs that harkened back to the brand's earlier days and signature elements, such as strong, architectural cuts and a mostly monochrome color palette, Fashionista reported. Asymmetric colors and bra-tops with comfy pants were also featured in nods to past and future, as well as a jaw-dropping burst of bright yellow.
The Helmut Lang show was broadcast live on their web site. Before that, on Thursday, the brand prepped by hosting a special photo booth session in SoHo as part of New York's Fashion's Night Out. The photos taken there, along with a recording of the fashion show, also appear on the site.
