Rachel Zoe is back, and her life is more hectic than ever.
Season four of "The Rachel Zoe Project" premiered Tuesday on Bravo, with the first episode beginning light-years away from where season three left off. When we last saw Zoe, the marriage between her and her husband Roger was in question due to Zoe’s inability to “slow down” and her reluctance to start a family. But season four starts off with a bang: Zoe is six months pregnant, and she and Roger are trying to find a home to settle into while simultaneously running their booming business. The result? A slightly pretentious but surprisingly honest and heartfelt look into what it takes to become both a mommy and a mogul.
Because this is reality television we’re talking about here, there’s an underlying cheesiness factor that’s pretty unavoidable. This is only exacerbated by Bravo Network's gratuitous use of the sometimes-dramatic-sometimes-extremely-whimsical background score that runs throughout all of their programming (why do they do that!?). I wonder how much emotion the scene with Roger going to look at real estate would evoke without the whimsical sounds of the keyboard in the background, loudly plunking away with each step he takes through his potential new home.
Despite said hokey-ness that plagues 95 percent of reality TV, "The Rachel Zoe Project" still manages to convey some true heart and realism. When you watch the scene where Zoe is stressing out about her editorial exhibit and says, "The reality of it is: If the buyers don't like the clothes, and don't buy the collection, I'm over. That's it," you really do believe her and are able to relate to her feelings of pressure to succeed.
Scenes in which Zoe and Roger bicker are also extremely realistic. Because he's not only her husband, but the president of her company, their interactions and slight irritations with each other will ring true to most couples that spend just a littttle too much time together—especially couples that are preparing to have their first baby while also working together to launch an entire contemporary clothing line, and,oh yeah, trying to rent a multi-million dollar home at the same time. OK, I guess that last part is why these people have a reality show and we're just the viewers.
