The reason I watch The Mentalist is because it is so enjoyable, nothing wrong with that, and I always find myself smiling by the end of the show and I like that feeling. Besides, the show always keeps one guessing as to what Patrick Jane will be up to next and the lengths he'll go to to remain with the CBI while he somehow always manages to get one of his compatriats to help him fudge the rules. The difference this year is that he is a bit more secretive about what he up to. It's what makes the show so different from the usually procedural police dramas, where they follow strict procedures according to the book or police manual. Even in real life police do lie when interviewing those they believe committed a crime and do some sting operations to get information or evidence to break a case and often walk a fine line. The Mentalist just takes it a little bit further.
Also Patrick Jane appears to be at times quite arrogant and a bit of a smart-aleck, I find that's a facade he puts on because his character is vulnerable. He feels he needs to solve the cases to be valuable to the CBI or else he is out. I also like the other character's and their interaction and every once in a while we learn a little more about what motivates them given the circumstances.
