How To Get Away With Murder‘s episode 11 of season 3 picked up right where last week’s ended: with a flashback of Wes (Alfred Enoch) walking out of the police station only to be picked up by Frank (Charlie Weber).
As Frank drives the car into an abandoned alley, the pair discuss several things. First, Wes asks Frank how he knew to find him at the station, to which Frank only responds with a vague “I have my sources.” Wes tells Frank that Laurel (Karla Souza) never cared about him (Frank), but that she was in a loving relationship with Wes and that she would never forgive Frank if he killed Wes. Wes also calls out Frank for killing Annalise’s unborn baby in the car crash years prior, and asks Frank what else Annalise has asked him to do ever since he started working for her. Wes even accuses Frank of killing his ex-girlfriend from Season 1, Rebecca, which Frank denies, although we know Frank killed her. After sparring verbally, Wes gets out of the car and walks away.
We cut to the present and Frank is shown confessing to killing Wes, although the police begin to question whether he is simply taking the fall for Annalise as a favor-return for all the care, protection, and job opportunities she gave him years ago. Frank insists they charge and arrest him, and even tells the police to examine the security camera footage of him picking up Wes at the station and driving away if they need additional evidence to charge him.
Meanwhile, Annalise (Viola Davis) struggles to adjust to prison life. She is often taunted and harassed by the other inmates, who call her a lying, murderous and corrupt lawyer.
Bonnie (Liza Weil) continues fighting to prove Annalise’s innocence for the murder of Wes and for starting the fire, but faces more and more obstacles along the way. Michaela (Aja Naomi King), Asher (Matt McGorry) and Conor (Jack Falahee) also struggle to find a way of helping Annalise get released from jail in addition to clearing their names from all their past crimes, including the murder of Sam.
Conor, just like last episode, is the only one who seems very reluctant to help Annalise because he feels she, along with Wes, is responsible for most of their problems. Michaela takes charge and first laces an angry tirade at Middleton University President Hargrove (Lauren Velez) at a meeting she, Asher and Conor attend with her, to express her frustration about how silent the university has been about both Wes’s death and Annalise’s wrongful arrest. Michaela angrily says Hargrove should worry more about these issues– mainly because Annalise is a great law professor who is being framed for a crime she didn’t commit– than “covering the college’s own ass.”
Hargrove visits Annalise in jail and tells her she is there to help in any way she can.
Michaela continues to take charge and asks Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) to hack the D.A.’s office after Bonnie tells them Assistant D.A.s Denver (Benito Martinez) and Atwood (Milauna Jackson) keep rejecting Frank’s confession and doing everything possible to paint Annalise as the culprit. Michaela reveals to Oliver that she and Asher know Conor told Oliver about their murder of Sam, and Oliver, terrified, agrees to hack the D.A. There, he finds a trove full of files they have compiled about Annalise and her record, and find old photos of all the people whose murders she was directly or indirectly involved with: Sam, former A.D.A. Emily Sinclair (whom Asher ran over with his car after she insulted his dead judge father), Rebecca, Lila Stangard. Of course, Annalise did not commit any of these murders (Frank committed two and Wes the other one), but the Keating gang, plus Bonnie, to whom they show these files, quickly realize the D.A.– especially Atwood, who seems to have a strong, sadistic wish to see Annalise go down at all costs– will find a way to charge her for all these crimes too.
Atwood and another official question question Annalise in prison with Bonnie by her side. After Atwood takes over the interrogation, presents the photos of Wes’s burnt corpse and begins spewing lies about Annalise’s disdain for Wes, Bonnie tries to get the meeting to end and Annalise goes crazy, and lunges across the table to try and attack Atwood while screaming like a maniac and while police restrain her and handcuff her again.
Nate (Billy Brown) goes to talk to Laurel at the hospital to see if she can corroborate Frank’s confession, but she refuses to speak until the end, when Bonnie tells her she is the only one who can “make this right.” Laurel lies to the detectives, saying the drugs doctors have given her have worn off and that she remembers more details from the night of the fire including one key detail: that she saw Frank in the basement, and that he escaped through the emergency back door. “He did this,” says Laurel, weeping.
Frank is thus arrested, but is charged…. as Annalise’s co-conspirator??! Wow, the Philadelphia police are REALLY refuse to believe Annalise Keating is innocent. They hate her THAT much. Bonnie briefly talks to Annalise in prison to tell her she is still being charged and the two despair over the miserable outlook of the latter’s case.
The last scene cuts back to the flashback of Wes walking out of Frank’s car after the two have their tense discussion near the police station. However, now we see what happened immediately after that: Frank calls someone on his phone, and informs them he is keeping track of Wes. We then see that the person on the other end of the line is… Bonnie! And the episode ends there.
Did Bonnie have something to do with Wes’ s murder?? Did she conspire with Frank to hire someone to kill him? We’ll surely find out soon. Who knows if Wes’s true murderer will be finally revealed next week or until the end of this season. Either way, the suspense is getting insane.
