Rapper Tyga released a new single titled “Move to L.A.” this Friday, from his upcoming project Bitch I’m The Shit 2. The new single boasts a smooth guitar sample keeping a steady pace in the background while Ty Dolla $ign croons over the chorus.
“Move to L.A.” features a smooth sample of the Mase classic “Tell Me What You Want” and does seem to fit into a Los Angeles head space. The soft claps and plucked guitar make the song sound like a summer hit, in every sense of the word.
The only problem with the song though, and it’s a big one, is its lyrics. Tyga begins the song by suggesting his girlfriend move to L.A. to be “with your best friend.” He repeats this six times before Ty Dolla $ign sings, “Baby, you gon’ get this work / Yeah, baby you gon’ get this 9 to 5 / 5 to 9 and overtime.” The “work” – and what it alludes to – of the chorus seems to clash directly with the laid back vibes the L.A. theme is supposed to exude.
In addition, Tyga’s verses have very little novelty. He raps mostly about treating his girlfriend to a lavish lifestyle of luxury in sunny Los Angeles. Unfortunately, hearing this played-out motif for the millionth time may make most people skip the relaxation set up by the song’s beat and head straight to sleep.
