Jennifer Lopez 'A.K.A.' Review: J Lo Shows Off Her Range

Jennifer Lopez finally returns with the new album A.K.A., her first album since she released Love? in 2011. In A.K.A., Lopez manages to stick to her musical roots while adding in a modern twist. The album goes from soft ballads to hip-hop, featuring rappers like the legendary Nas and the newly popular Iggy Azalea.

The title track “A.K.A.” features T.I. and the combination of J.Lo’s beautiful voice, T.I.’s rapping and the fun beat make for a great opener to the album. The song is about how her ex was unable to see what they had together until after she moved on.

J.Lo’s diversity makes this album incredibly impressive; she follows up a club-ready song, like “Booty” featuring Pitbull, with a pop song that brings fans back in time to her early days of fame. With sweet sounding songs like “Never Satisfied,” Lopez shows fans how much she misses a past love as she sings, “I’m losing my mind. I can’t stop thinking about your sweet love all of the time.” One of the most beautiful songs on A.K.A., “Let It Be Me,” is a sensitive song about devoting love to one person, even when people think it’s foolish.

A.K.A. ends with “Same Girl” featuring French Montana, who is also featured on the popular single “I Luh Ya Papi.” In this song (and throughout the rest of the album) Jenny From the Block shows that she’s still the same girl who grew up in the Bronx and worked hard for stardom. J.Lo seems to be one of the few artists who can manage to maintain her signature sound while keeping her music modern. A.K.A. shows fans and critics why J.Lo has such a following: her music is timeless.
