I Told You I Was Freaky By Flight of The Conchords

If you haven’t yet stumbled upon HBO’s cult hit TV series, Flight Of The Conchords, it comes highly recommended, full of dry wit that will bring many a laugh. But the show itself deserves its own review (and we have one in the TV section – Ed). What is under examination here is the two leading men – Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement – and their latest CD release, “I Told You I Was Freaky.”

This thirteen track soundtrack to the show’s second season is more like stand-up comedy set to music than an actual song-and-dance CD, but it brings many classic lines as the two singers poke fun at most of pop culture, focusing mainly on laughing at themselves and their lack of success with the ladies.

The CD opens with “Hurt Feelings,” a track on which both Brett and Jemaine prove that they have no shame and even less ego, because these two white boys from New Zealand are putting forward the argument that they really are rappers at heart. They then go on to list every moment through life that has hurt their feelings and pull off a rap beat fairly well for two very un-rap guys.

“Rambling Through The Avenues Of Time” is the best musical moment on the CD, where Brett pulls off the masquerade as an acoustic folk singer remarkably well, but Jemaine’s background comments provide all the comedy on the track. Adding in lines like: “Brett, could you please move over to your right/I’m trying to watch TV” in between lines assures that the song never gets too serious.

There’s also a Flight Of The Conchords take on The Police classic “Roxanne” sung with “You Don’t Have To Be A Prostitute,” where the duo turns the classic song around and sings about a man’s alternatives to working the street, backed by a reggae tune.

It may barely border on music, but fans of Flight Of The Conchords will appreciate “I Told You I Was Freaky” many times over and new initiates to Brett and Jemaine’s bizarre world are sure to be swiftly become full fledged fans after listening to the hilarity of this record.
