Duck Dynasty Season 3 is full of family, laughs, hunting and, what else, camouflage.
When thinking about purchasing television seasons on DVD, an important question to ask is "can I watch this season independently of the program's other seasons and A) enjoy it and B) understand it?" With Duck Dynasty's Season Three DVD Collection, you can respond with an astounding "yes" to both A and B. I had never seen one minute of Duck Dynasty, not even a commercial, when I sat down to watch Season Three of this wonderfully wacky program and it didn't hinder my enjoyment one bit.
How many of you have hilarious hillbilly friends who are constantly setting up pranks, getting into funny scenarios of all sorts and taking you along for the ride? Well, thanks to this show, we all do now. Duck Dynasty follows the Robertson clan, developers of a duck call company that has made them millionaires. Except, other than CEO Willie's multimillion dollar mansion, you would never really know these folks were filthy rich when watching the show. The Robertson's are down-to-earth, with some family members more back-country and rustic than any person you may have ever come into contact with. Every member of the Robertson’s is more hilarious and outspoken than the next and their adventurous spirits and love of the great woodsy outdoors leads them into all kinds of humorous situations, many occurring in a world most of us are unfamiliar with: the Louisiana bayou.
The stars of the show are the bearded, redneck Robertson men: Willie, his brother Jace, Uncle Si, and patriarch father Phil are never without their camouflaged gear, playful teasing quips and adventurous natures. The highlight of the show is watching these men get into wacky adventures in the great outdoors, or kibbitz around the Duck Commander company warehouse. Willie is sweet and a real family man, and he is often the butt of many of the brotherly teasing jokes. Jace and Si throw out one funny line after the next and will keep you laughing from the season's start until the finale. Si is like the crazy uncle you never had – sweet, but funny, too quirky to be married (it turns out he does have a wife who has chosen not to participate on the show.) Phil, calm and deadpan, is the perfect counterbalance to the goofier, outgoing men.
Together, the guys go hunting, fishing, shooting or ‘insert-here any outdoorsy activity here’. It may not sound like it would make for exhilarating television, but because of the humor, good-natured personalities and jovial wisecracks, you will feel like you are another family member out there with them on these adventures.
Patiently and lovingly by the men's side are the Robertson women, who are lovely, warm, and beautiful. These women can teach anyone the lesson of loving someone for who they really are – hairy beards, sarcastic demeanor and all. Next to every great man is a great woman and that could not be more true than with this dynasty.
Within the first five minutes of the season's premiere episode, I was hooked. Season 3 is jam-packed with different funny escapades and misadventures. The first episode, "Cant Hardly Weight" addresses Willie's weight gain, brought up by brother Jace. With his high school reunion coming up, Willie decides to lose a few pounds and, wouldn't you know, he ends up downward dog in his wife's yoga class. Classic. In "Let's Go Hunting, Deer," Willie and Jace take their lovely, dainty wives out hunting. These women are the definition of good sports. I was a bit surprised that getting down and dirty was not commonplace for women married to the Richardson men. But what's better reality TV than fish out of water scenarios, especially when someone accidentally sprays themselves with doe urine? The men chase around a giant lizard after it escapes into the warehouse in "Here, Lizard Lizard." They try everything they can think of to catch it, without success, while on the other side of town, Willie and Si invite themselves to a ride-along with the West Monroe Police Department. Hijinks ensue. In the extended season finale episode, “Aloha, Robertsons!” Willie takes the entire family to Hawaii. Seeing these men in Hawaiian shirts and hanging ten was another classic misfits-out-of-place occurrence, and it could not have been a more enjoyable ride to watch. The finale was the highest rated telecast in A&E history before it was beaten by the show's Season Four premiere.
DVD extras include comical "Mashups," clip montages focused on specific topics. For example, "Blessed with a Great Arm" describes how Phil was an amazing quarterback, even having Terry Bradshaw as his back up, but chose to be in the woods duck hunting rather than live a life on the football field. "Hardly Working" was my personal favorite, filled with clips of the guys slacking off and joking around at the warehouse. The "Webisodes" extras are in a similar vein: clip collections discussing certain things and showcasing more behind-the-scenes footage. These include "Camo Photo Shoot Behind the Scenes,” a look at the DVD cover shoot involving all the Robertsons. Another, "Unknown Facts about the Robertsons" has family members talking to the camera giving insider factoids. There are also deleted and extended scenes and music videos included in the special features.
The Duck Dynasty Season Three two-Disc DVD Collection will make anyone a fan of this family and the show, and will only make already loyal watchers fall further in love. You will laugh and explore this Duck Dynasty world, and feel like the N'teenth member of this pranking, hunting, fishing, duck-call making, loving Louisiana clan.
