Sinead O'Connor, 56
Irish singer Sinead O’Connor has died at the age of 56.
O’Connor was born in Dublin on December 8, 1966. She was known for taking bold and somewhat controversial stances against social and political issues.
In 1992, she ripped up a photo of the pope while performing on Saturday Night Live in protest of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, and was one of the first women in the public eye to shave their heads, defying traditional standards of femininity.
During her lifetime, O’Connor released ten studio albums. In 1991, she won the Best Alternative Music Performance Grammy award for her song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” though she did not attend the ceremony. The song was named number one in the world in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards.
