Days before the 63rd annual Grammy Awards, Zayn Malik slammed the awards show in a tweet.
“F–k the Grammys and everyone associated,” he tweeted. “Unless you shake hands and send gifts, there’s no nomination considerations. Next year I’ll send you a basket of confectionary.”
After the tweet, fans were quick to speculate that Malik was shading his former One Direction bandmate Harry Styles, who is opening the ceremony and is the first of the five former bandmates to receive any Grammy nominations. Styles is nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance for his song “Watermelon Sugar,” Best Music Video for “Adore You” and Best Pop Vocal Album for Fine Line.
While not mentioning Styles, Malik later returned with a follow-up tweet to explain. “My tweet was not personal or about eligibility but was about the need for inclusion and the lack of transparency of the nomination process and the space that creates and allows favoritism, racism and networking politics to influence the voting process.”
Malik was not the only artist who recently spoke out against the Recording Academy, after nominations for this years awards was announced in November, The Weeknd slammed the Grammys after being snubbed for his After Hours album.
Malik released his third studio album, Nobody Is Listening on January 15. He also welcomed his first child with girlfriend Gigi Hadid in late 2020.
The 63rd annual Grammy Awards will air live on Sunday March 14 at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
