Former One Direction band member Zayn Malik released a book today entitled ZAYN, in which he discusses his battle with an eating disorder.
Though he admits he didn’t realize it at the time, there were times during 1D’s heyday when Zayn suffered from an eating disorder. “It wasn’t as though I had any concerns about my weight or anything like that,” the singer explains. “I’d just go for days – sometimes two or three days straight – without eating anything at all.”
This is something he has not discussed publicly before. “When I look back at images of myself from around November 2014, before the final tour, I can see how ill I was,” he admits. “Something I’ve never talked about in public before, but which I have come to terms with since leaving the band, is that I was suffering from an eating disorder.”
“I think it was about control. I didn’t feel like I had control over anything else in my life, but food was something I could control, so I did,” Zayn explains. “I had lost so much weight I had become ill. The workload and the pace of life on the road put together with the pressures and strains of everything going on within the band had badly affected my eating habits.”
Zayn quit the popular British boy band in March 2015 and went on to become a successful solo artist since then. Just after that, the singer also split with his fiance Perrie Edwards.
In addition to his new book, Zayn has also recently worked with Versace to create his own clothing line, Zayn X Versus. He also plans to create a fictional television show based on his experiences with 1D.
