Ex One Direction star Zayn Malik will work with Law & Order creator Dick Wolf to make a new hour-long drama series about a boy band.
The show, which will be called Boys and will premiere on NBC, will focus on a boy band thrust into fame and the pressures put on its members. The show, while fictional, will touch on the experiences of One Direction, which quickly rose to fame following its formation on The X Factor‘s 2010 season.
“Zayn certainly brings an authentic point of view to this world where kids are catapulted into fame at a dizzying speed,” NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke said.
Malik will be onboard as an executive producer for the show. The 23-year-old left One Direction about a year ago to advance his solo career. His debut album Mind of Mine was released in March and hit the number one spot on the Billboard Top 200 with hits such as “Pillow Talk” and “Like I Would.” Anxiety, however, has gotten in the way of his live performances, having to pull out of a concert in Dubai on Tuesday.
Simon Cowell, who signed One Direction following their appearance on The X Factor, is disappointed Malik did not approach him with the television idea.
“I think he should have come to me with it, if I’m being honest with you,” Cowell told Entertainment Tonight. “I do actually believe that when they’ve got these ideas, bearing in mind where we started, they should actually come to me.”
