Zac Efron releases first look of himself as notorious serial killer Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.
Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Joe Berling and writer Michael Werwie are behind the project. Efron posted a photo of himself on set and in character with the caption, “Meet Ted. #BehindTheScenes,” on Twitter.
The film is told from the perspective of Bundy’s longtime girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer, played by Lily Collins, who denied the allegations against Bundy for years. Ultimately, she turned him into the police, but the pair still dated on and off for seven years. The killer eventually confessed to 30 homicides committed in seven states over four years in the late 1970s. The exact number of his victims, however, is still unknown, and could possibly be higher than what he stated.
John Malkovich will play Edward Cowart, the judge presiding over the Bundy trial, who imposed a death sentence on the murderer. Bundy escaped from prison twice before his 1989 execution. A release date for the film has not been announced. Until then, Efron is starring in the musical The Greatest Showman, in theaters now.
