Yelp Not Suing ‘South Park’ For $10 Million

Yelp has no plans to file a lawsuit against South Park after the Comedy Central show mocked Yelpers in a recent episode.

Yelp Not Suing ‘South Park’

A satire site, NBC.com.co, alleged that Yelp was suing South Park for $10 million for slander and libel over the episode that took the customer reviewing site and its users to task. The satirical article even included fake quotes from a Yelp spokesperson, as well as a response to the lawsuit from South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

“Our company, along with its millions of users, take Yelp very seriously,” read the faux statement from Yelp spokesman Paul Horner. “To say our critics are out there trying to get free food and using racist slurs on little Mexican children is beyond ridiculous. To compare the users of Yelp to terrorists is not only cruel, but the definition of libel and slander.”

Stone and Parker, according to NBC.com.co’s story, gave the lawsuit a one star review.

“We’ve taken a hard look at the information presented to us, and after reviewing it, we have given Yelp and their lawsuit only one star,” said Stone and Parker in their fake statement. “Their lawyers delivered us legal documents in a very unprofessional manner; not bothering to smile or even a quick handshake. The writing on the envelope was barely legible and in two different colors. It is our personal opinion that Yelp could do a much better job by not suing us for ten million dollars.”

The satire article was picked up as legitimate in no time, causing a viral story about Yelp suing South Park. Upon getting wind of the story, Yelp released a statement to clear the air and share their respect for the comedy series.

“The rumor about a Yelp lawsuit is entirely untrue and was started by a satire site that has received far too much media credibility,” a real Yelp spokesperson told Eater. “We have no interest in legal action against the fantastic team that makes the South Park magic happen.”

Yelp also responded to the fake news on Twitter.
