Part two of Yellowstone’s fifth season has sparked outrage from fans after the sudden death of Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton.
Two years after the last episode of the show was aired, the fate of Costner’s character was quickly revealed, as the episode began with Kelly Reilly‘s Beth Dutton and Luke Grimes‘ Kayce Dutton finding out that he had been shot and killed.
Initially, the death appeared to be a suicide, but it was later discovered that lawyer Sarah Atwood murdered John.
Although Costner confirmed his departure from the show last spring, fans were still taken aback by how his character left.
Many fans took to X to share their thoughts on John’s exit.
One user wrote, “Honestly, the show creator missed the audience mark on this one by a million miles.”
“I don’t even want to finish the show anymore,” another complained.
Other users blamed Costner for his decision to leave the show in the middle of its final season.
“Kevin Costner ruined what should’ve been a perfect ending to this show and all for a failed 3 part s–t movie,” one person wrote, referring to his new series Horizon.
In May 2023, Costner disclosed that he would not return to Yellowstone after Season 5 Part 1.
That same month, it was also announced that the show would end on Season 5, leading many fans to assume that it was wrapping up because Costner decided to leave.
Creator Taylor Sheridan said that Costner was choosing Horizon over Yellowstone, but Costner viewed things in a different light.
In May 2024, the actor revealed that Yellowstone was “first position” on his list of priorities.
“I didn’t do Horizon because I was tired of doing Yellowstone. That’s a bull–- story. I didn’t do Horizon to compete with Yellowstone. This [project] is something I’ve had a long time,” he said. “I was straight up with [Sheridan], and he said what we would do, and I believed him. And we didn’t get there.”
Yellowstone airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on the Paramount Network.
