Mulder and Scully are officially returning to television in a special six-episode revival of The X-Files.
X-Files creator Chris Carter announced the news on Tuesday, March 24. Carter confirmed that he would be back to oversee the project, and that stars David Duchovny (Fox Mulder) and Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully) are will reprise their roles.
“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break. The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories,” Carter said.
The news of a reboot has been, for many fans, a long time coming. Anderson and Duchovny are regulars at various Comic Con and sci-fi conventions, and recently confirmed their desire to revisit their X-Files characters.
“It’s been 13 years, hope my suit still fit,” Duchovny joked, sharing an old episode still of Mulder and Scully in their FBI finest.
Production on The X-Files revival is set to take place over the summer, and so far there aren’t any plans on extending the six-episode event. It’s unclear when, exactly, the revival will take place in the X-Files cannon. The X-Files originally aired form 1993 to 2002, and ended with Mulder on the run from the FBI. Fans were later given a glimpse into Mulder and Scully’s future in the 2008 feature film, The X Files: I Want To Believe, in which Mulder and Scully were carrying on a romantic relationship and had left their jobs at the FBI.
In a recent interview, Carter revealed that the six-episodes would likely take place after the film. “I’ll be honest to the characters, and what happened to them since the series ended and the second movie,” Carter told The Daily Beast.
The X-Files special six-episode revival will air on Fox, the network that originated the series over twenty years ago.
“We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of The X-Files – one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers – and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again. The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture – yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as The X-Files, and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for,” said Chairmen and CEOs of FOX, Dana Walden and Gary Newman.
No other information has been revealed about the reboot, but with Carter’s involvement and the two stars, Duchovny and Anderson returning, fans are hopeful that other original cast members will return. Mitch Pileggi, who reprised his role as Walter Skinner in the 2008 film, teased fans on Twitter about the news, but refused to say whether or not he would be joining his co-stars in the reboot.
