WWE Fan Arrested After Punching Randy Orton During Match In South Africa
A WWE fan surprised star fighter Randy Orton Tuesday night when he got in the ring and managed to nail Orton once in the groin before security dragged him away.
Orton was in Cape Town, South Africa for WWE’s worldwide tour and was gearing up for his SmackDown match against Wade Barrett when a male fan snuck up from the audience. Orton was reportedly standing on the ropes, interacting with the crowd when the unplanned incident occurred. Orton appeared unfazed by the whole thing, and continued pumping up the crowd after the male fan was escorted out of the ring.
Fans in the audience recorded the incident and videos of the assault quickly sprung up on YouTube and other social media sites. Fans doubted it’s authenticity until WWE released a statement claiming that the disruptive fan was not part of the show.
“WWE.com has learned that Randy Orton was violently attacked by an audience member during a SmackDown World Tour Live Event in Cape Town, South Africa, this evening. Footage of the attack was captured by a WWE fan and posted to YouTube, and shows the perpetrator striking Orton from behind. The matter is currently under investigation by the local authorities, and the South African fan is being held in jail pending criminal charges. The extent of Orton’s injuries are unknown at this time,” WWE said in a statement.
Considering how Orton is seen continuing the match after the attack, it appears the WWE Champion is fine.
