WrestleMania, which is considered to be the biggest event in the world of entertainment wrestling, held its 33rd annual show on Sunday night before bleeding into the early hours of Monday morning.
With a total of 13 matches, WrestleMania 33 lasted nearly seven hours, including the pre-show in which three matches were fought. With that long of a run time, there were plenty of stories packed into the event held in Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.
In one of the earliest matches of the night, the 33-man battle royal for the Andre The Giant Memorial Trophy, football star Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski made a surprise appearance. While his friend Mojo Rawley was battling the second-to-last man standing, Gronk left his front-row seat and jumped in the ring.
“It’s the biggest event Gronk has ever been involved in,” said one of the announcers. “WrestleMania!”
Gronkowski has won two Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and is currently on the team’s injured reserve list for a herniated disk. Nonetheless, he appeared healthy during WrestleMania and knocked down Jinder Mahal to assist Rawley with his victory.
The main event, a battle between The Undertaker and Roman Reigns, saw the comeback of WWE’s most celebrated announcer, Jim Ross. After 23 minutes, The Undertaker, whose real name is Mark Calaway, lost. Leaving his signature hat, coat, and gloves in the center of the ring, The Undertaker announced his retirement. Calaway has wrestled professionally since 1984.
In a tweet after the event The Undertaker wrote, “Thank you WWE Universe for the love & respect, you have given me. With you my legacy lives on, never forget what I have done.”
And while the event saw the end of one storyline, it also the the beginning of another. Wrestler John Cena proposed to his long-time girlfriend, Stephanie Nicole Garcia-Colace, who is better known as Nikki Bella. Together, the engaged couple also won the Mixed Tag Team Match.
