A Lebanese Group called Campaign to Boycott Supporters of Israel-Lebanon successfully convinced Lebanon to ban DC comic film Wonder Woman from release in the country.
Due to a decades old animosity between the middle eastern neighbors, Lebanon does not want the film available in the country because lead actress Gal Gadot hails from Israel. The Lebanese government’s Ministry of Economy and Trade has decided to block the film.
Earlier films in which Gadot is featured but does not star, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Furious 7, have been successfully screened in Lebanon. In fact, Batman v Superman, which introduced Gadot’s Wonder Woman character, was the third biggest box office hit in Lebanon last year.
Wonder Woman hits American theaters this Friday and is one of the most highly anticipated films of the season. Warner Bros. has declined to comment on Lebanon’s decision. Film distributor Tony Chacra told the BBC the situation is “very frustrating,” as “the movie has nothing to do with Israel.” Wonder Woman is being produced by two American companies and one Chinese, so the only part associated with Israel is Gadot.
