On Friday, it was announced that after several delays, the highly anticipated superhero movie Wonder Woman 1984 will be released simultaneously on HBO Max and theatrically. Many people were overjoyed at this recent announcement, as they can finally see a blockbuster movie in the year that it was supposed to be released in. Despite director Patty Jenkins’ insistence that the film would be released in theaters, it seems that fans will not have to worry about the upcoming DC Extended Universe movie facing another delay after this announcement. This decision allows people who are hesitant to step into a movie theater due to the pandemic to still be able to watch Wonder Woman 1984 without having to wait until it is released on dvd or a streaming service.
The decision to simultaneously release Wonder Woman 1984 in theaters and on HBO Max was made by the Chair and CEO WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Group Ann Sarnoff. “This is an amazing film that really comes to life on the big screen and, working with our partners in the exhibition community, we will provide that option to consumers in the U.S. where theaters are open,” Sarnoff said. “We realize that a lot of consumers can’t go back to the movies due to the pandemic, so we also want to give them the option to see Wonder Woman 1984 via our HBO Max platform.”
Wonder Woman 1984 is one of the few movies to be released simultaneously in theaters and streaming during the COVID-19 pandemic and the first comic book movie to do so.
Fans of DC can once again see Gal Gadot as the titular superhero once again where she will be seen alongside her fellow cast members Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal. Wonder Woman 1984 will first be released internationally to areas that do not have HBO Max on December 16, before coming out in North America on December 25 in theaters and on streaming.
