Two people were arrested in South Carolina for attempting to traffic illicit drugs inside a fake pregnancy belly.
The Anderson County Sheriff’s Department wrote in a Facebook post that police officers spoke to suspects Anthony Miller and Cemeka Mitchem during a traffic stop last month and noticed that Mitchem appeared to be pregnant. The stop occurred after officers saw Miller driving recklessly through traffic along Interstate 85, nearly colliding with an 18-wheeler.
When the officers spoke to Miller and Mitchem separately, they detected a “red flag” when they each provided conflicting information about Mitchem’s prospective due date.

The sheriff’s department later said that as Mitchem realized that the officers were becoming suspicious of her, she “immediately took off running,” causing drugs to fall out from her rubber stomach. Police recovered more than 1,5000 grams of cocaine in total.
The pair’s arrest occurred in April, but the sheriff’s department didn’t announce it until this week. The duo was denied bond and remains in police custody.
South Carolina reported earlier this year that the state is experiencing a “significant increase” in drug overdose deaths, mostly due to opioids. There were 1,734 overdose deaths in 2020 and 2,168 in 2021.
Sara Goldsby, the director of South Carolina’s Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services, stated that other drugs are being laced with fentanyl, which can “cause a fatal overdose even in a small quantity.”
