Robert Durst, the subject of last year’s HBO documentary The Jinx, is standing trial for the murder of longtime friend Susan Berman, who was killed in Dec. 2000.
Prosecutors say his actions were taken because Berman knew about the death of Durst’s wife in the early 80s. Witnesses are now reportedly afraid to testify against him, given that those close to him continue to die.
Deputy District Attorney John Lewin revealed that the real estate heir has around $100 million in assets. He also has asked Judge Mark Windham to schedule a conditional hearing to record witness testimonies before the trial date, as they are “understandably concerned about their safety.”
The fact that Durst is being charged with killing Berman simply because of what she knew is what frightens the witnesses. Also, Durst’s Texas neighbor was killed and dismembered after being described as a witness.
The fact that Durst is already behind bars and is wheelchair-ridden does not ease witness minds. Durst’s attorney David Chesnoff has asserted that the witnesses should have nothing to fear of his client.
At the time of Berman’s death, Durst was not charged – his arrest came the day after HBO released their documentary, in which Durst can be heard saying, “What the hell did I do? Killed them all of course.”
Since then, Durst has admitted that he smoked marijuana daily and was high on meth during his appearances in the film. Durst has pleaded not guilty to his murder charge. The full trial will be scheduled later in 2017 after preliminary hearings.
