Willow Smith dropped her debut album Ardipithecus on Friday, after posting mysterious tweets about Dec. 11 earlier this week.
Smith is credited as sole songwriter on 14 of the 15 tracks on the new album, and sole producer on 10 of them. Other credits include Smith’s older brother Trey Smith on three tracks, and Jarah Aubrey on two of them.
“Ardipithecus Ramidus is the scientific name of the first hominid bones found on earth. I wanted to name my musical compilation after it because, while I was making these songs I was in such a transitional state,” Smith told The Fader in an interview.
“Digging deep in the soil of my heart and finding bits and pieces of my ancient self that tell stories, which end up being the lyrics to the songs,” the pop singer explained. “Ardipithecus is my first album in my entire career and it makes me feel so blessed to be able to share my evolution.”
The first single released for the album is titled “F Q-C #8” and it has a unique beat and artsy sound that showcases Smith’s creative mind.
Ardipithecus can be streamed and downloaded on U.S. Itunes.
