“I don’t smoke anymore — take better care of myself,” Grammy-winning Nelson said. “I have abused my lungs quite a bit in the past, so breathing is a little more difficult these days and I have to be careful.”
The 86-year-old musician had to postpone his tour in August due to breathing issues. However, he managed to continue the show the following month.
“I started smoking cedar bark, went from that to cigarettes to whatever,” Nelson said. “And that almost killed me.” Now, he says, he’s more careful about his health, “I don’t smoke anymore – take better care of myself.”
Nelson said that keeping his lungs healthy is of supreme importance, especially with performing.
“Your lungs are the biggest muscle you have got. So when you’re out there working, you are working out,” Nelson said.
Additionally, Nelson said he didn’t care that his health issues have been a frequent cause of internet speculation.
“I’m here; I’m glad to be here,” he said. “I’m lucky to be here.”
