Willie Nelson Headlines Texas Protest Rally Against Voting Restriction Bill

A four-day march in support of Texas legislators who left the state ended on Saturday with country singer Willie Nelson leading the crowd in a rendition of “Vote ‘Em Out.”

Texas is one of several states following the 2020 election to have introduced legislation in an attempt to make it more difficult to vote. If passed, the bills would require new identification rules for people voting by mail and would prevent workers from sending a vote-by-mail application to anyone who has not explicitly requested one. In addition, they would ban extended hours for early voting and ban drive-through voting.

Texas Democrats, the political minority, left the state in order to prevent the legislation from passing.

The march in support of these politicians and in protest of the possible voting laws began on Wednesday, sponsored by an activist group called Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival.

It was led in part by former Democratic Congressman and presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke, who rallied the crowd, saying, “I ask you to think about every man and every woman who had the courage in their convictions and did what they needed to do in their own moment of truth in this country’s history.”

Nelson closed the four-day march with a short set that featured his 2018 song “Vote ‘Em Out” about exercising the right to vote.

In a statement through the Poor People’s Campaign, he said, “It is important that we ensure the right for EVERY American to vote and vote safely.”

Previously, President Joe Biden offered his support to those battling restrictive voting laws and called for Republicans to act.

“We’ll be asking my Republican friends in Congress and states and cities and counties to stand up, for God’s sake, and help prevent this concerted effort to undermine our elections and the sacred right to vote,” Biden said. “Have you no shame?”
