Val Kilmer set Top Gun fans into a frenzy earlier this week when he posted on Facebook about starring in the sequel.
Kilmer seemed all ready to reprise the part of Iceman in Top Gun 2 Tuesday, sharing his excitement at getting offered the part.
“I just got offered #topgun2 – not often you get to say ‘yes’ without reading the script…” Kilmer had written. “We will all miss [original director] Tony Scott one of the kindest gentlemen I’ve ever met in the film biz, but let’s fire up some fighter jets again!!!”
Before long, Kilmer’s post had taken on a life of its own, with many people declaring the sequel a definite go. Throwing some cold water on the story, Kilmer later admitted that it wasn’t a done deal.
“This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role,” Kilmer wrote in an edited version of his Facebook post. “I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the topgun… An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent…”

Five years ago, a Top Gun sequel seemed a sure thing, with Scott onboard to return to the director’s chair. However, Scott’s unexpected death in 2012 put those plans on hold. Now, producer David Ellison has Justin Marks penning a script for the film, though no director has been named yet.
The follow-up to the 1986 original will once again center on Kilmer’s Iceman and Tom Cruise‘s Maverick. Decades after becoming the best pilots out there, they’ll find themselves becoming increasingly obsolete because of the proliferation of drones.
Though Cruise has yet to comment on the latest reports, he seemed up to the task of playing Maverick once again when asked about a possible Top Gun 2 over the summer. There was one catch, however, Cruise wants to get back into the cockpit for real.
“It’s tricky to figure out,” Cruise told Extra. “If I can figure it out, if all of us can figure it out, it’d be fun to do. I’d like to fly those jets again, but we’ve got to do all the jets practical — no CGI on the jets.”
“If we can figure all that out, and the Department of Defense will allow us to do it, that would be fun,” Cruise added.
