Will Smith, former defensive lineman for the New Orleans Saints, was shot and killed over an altercation following a car accident Saturday.
The former football player was shot and killed after he was involved in a car accident involving a Hummer H2 in New Orleans’s Lower Garden District on Saturday night, police said. The driver of the Hummer and Smith “exchanged words at which time the driver of the Hummer produced a handgun” and shot Smith “multiple times,” police said.
Smith’s wife was also shot and transported to the hospital.
The shooter, Cardell Hayes, 28, was arrested after the incident and charged with second-degree murder. The police also recovered the gun at the scene.
A statement on behalf of Smith’s family said they were “thankful for the outpouring of support and prayers.”
Saints head coach Sean Payton and former Saints player Deuce McAllister both called his death “senseless.” They both shared their condolences on their social medias.
No further statements have been released on the condition of Smith’s wife.
