WikiLeaks Backtracks From Julian Assange’s Claim They’re ‘Hacking’ Donald Trump’s Tax Returns

Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, remarked on Friday that the site was working on obtaining Donald Trump’s tax returns — however, WikiLeaks dismissed Assange’s claim on Saturday.

WikiLeaks Denies Assange’s Claim On Donald Trump’s Tax Returns

Assange’s statement came during an interview with Real Time host Bill Maher — in which he discussed WikiLeaks recent exposure of Democratic National Committee emails and voicemails.

Assange confirmed that he will release more information to damage Hillary Clinton’s campaign, and was asked whether he had plans to do anything to Trump’s presidential hopes.

“Why don’t you hack into Donald Trump’s tax return?” Maher asked.

“We’re working on it,” Assange replied, without giving a further explanation.

Yet, a post from the WikiLeaks’ official Twitter account completely backtracked on Assange’s reply, insisting that the founder was joking.

“WikiLeaks isn’t ‘working on’ hacking Trump’s tax returns. Claim is a joke from a comedy show. We are ‘working on’ encouraging whistleblowers,” WikiLeaks tweeted.

Trump has consistently refused to publicly release his tax returns, a common practice for presidential candidates, stating he’s under audit.
