Following the deaths of brothers Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau at the end of August, Johnny’s widow has revealed she is pregnant with her third child.
The lives of the brothers were celebrated at a joint memorial service in Media, Pennsylvania, on Monday. Many NHL players and officials were in attendance to remember the hockey players, who were killed by a drunk driver while riding their bikes in New Jersey.
Matthew and Johnny’s wives both spoke at the service, with Matthew’s widow saying she felt like she was “trapped in a nightmare.” She is currently pregnant with the couple’s first child.
Johnny’s wife, Meredith, announced her pregnancy during her speech.
“In less than three years of marriage, we’ve created a family of five. It doesn’t even seem possible. But I look at it as the ultimate blessing,” she said. “How lucky am I to be the mother of John’s three babies?”
“Our last one being a blessing and so special despite these difficult circumstances,” she continued.
Meredith thanked those who played alongside her late husband on the Calgary Flames and got emotional when speaking about his decision to play for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
“To Columbus and our Blue Jackets family. I can’t describe how shattered I am that I don’t get more time in your amazing city with John.”
The driver that killed the brothers on Aug. 29, Sean Higgins, has been charged with two counts of death by auto and taken into custody.
