Rumors on the Internet speculating that President Emmanuel Macron’s wife, Brigitte Macron, was born a man have angered the family to the point that Brigitte has taken her accusers to court.
YouTuber Amandine Roy appeared in criminal court on Wednesday, the other defendant, Natacha Rey, was sick. Brigitte was not in attendance but her attorney was present in court.
The rumors began circulating in 2022, before the French elections, which implied that Brigitte was, in fact, her brother, Jean-Michel, who had changed his gender and identity. In December 2021, Roy and Rey discussed the theory in a now-deleted YouTube video. They also alleged that Brigitte’s first husband did not exist, and her children were birthed by his aunt, and his uncle forged documents.
The case will be decided on September 12, after the French parliamentary elections.
Macron and his wife’s relationship has always been controversial. They met when he was a 15-year-old student and she was his 39-year-old teacher.
In March of 2024, President Macron responded to these rumors, declaring that they were misogynistic attacks on his wife.
