First Lady Michelle Obama reveals why she said goodbye to her headline-making bangs revealing that they got in the way of her face.
Obama appears on the cover of Sunday’s issue of Parade magazine. When asked why she decided to forgo the hairdo, Obama’s answer was short and simple. “You know, it’s hard to make speeches with hair in your face,” she told the magazine.
In the interview, Obama also talks about her role as First Lady and how she raises her two daughters in the White House. “When you have a husband or a partner who’s either traveling for work or has huge responsibility… and I give my husband credit – he knows who their friends are, he knows what their schedule is. But he’s not making the calls to the dance studio to figure out what classes they’re taking next year… I think it’s important for both parents to shoulder that [responsibility]. I tell my kids, ‘I am thinking about you every other minute of my day.’ ”
When the First Lady debuted her bangs in January, she set off a whirlwind of press and jokes about her trendy hairstyle. Even fashion superstar and Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld commented on the bangs, saying, “I don’t understand the change of hair… Frankly, the fringe was a bad idea. It’s not good.”
The hairstyle was such a hot button topic that President Obama joked about it at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner in April.
Even Obama herself was in on the joke, calling her bangs her “mid-life crisis” in an interview with Rachel Ray.
In April Obama joked that she was ready for the bangs to go, telling ET, “The bangs are a day-by-day proposition. They’re starting to grow out, getting a little irritating, but it’s OK. It’s OK. We’ll be good.”
