Speculation suggests Solange Knowles attacked Jay Z in an effort to protect her sister, Beyoncé, and more rumors emerge as Solange and Beyoncé show their feelings on Instagram.
On Monday, May 12, video footage leaked of Solange attacking her brother in law in the elevator of the Standard Hotel after the Met Ball Gala on May 5. Neither Solange nor Beyoncé have commented on the leaked video of Solange attacking Jay Z, but that hasn’t stopped the speculation over what caused Solange to lash out in the first place.
One popular theory is that Solange became enraged when Jay Z announced that he had plans to attend Rihanna’s after-party without his wife Beyoncé. Drunk, Solange apparently picked a fight, questioning Jay Z: “Why can’t you go home?”
Solange then reportedly turned to her sister, saying, “Why does your husband need to go to the club right now?”
“You’re one to talk,” Jay Z replied according to the New York Daily News, causing Solange to go into a rage and attack him.
Similarly, a source told People that Solange attacked Jay Z after he “said something inappropriate to Beyoncé and Solange” and insisted that alcohol was not a factor.
Furthermore, a fake tweet from Solange circulated claiming that Solange resorted to violence because Jay Z hit Beyoncé.
“He tried the right one. I keep telling yall that n—a ain’t bout that life. U hit my sis I hit u hoe. Talk what you know! Y’all don’t know s—t [sic]” reads the fake explanation tweet.
The report from New York Daily News further states that tensions between Solange and her brother in law were already at a high after some of Solange’s friends tried to crash the Met Gala using Jay Z’s name – something Jay Z did not appreciate.
“Two of her friends, who were not dressed for the Met ball, showed up at the Standard [Hotel] and caused a scene downstairs. They wouldn’t leave and kept name-dropping Jay Z. They were pretending they were guests of his and not hers. Management went to Julius [Beyoncé’s bodyguard] and said there’s a problem,” a source told the Daily News.
The other rumor going around is that Solange was pushed to the breaking point because she was frustrated that Jay Z wasn’t doing enough to help her singing career.
“Solange is so angry because Jay Z promised to give her more help with her career and when she brought it up again the night of the gala, he just told her he didn’t have time to work with her in the studio,” a source told London’s Daily Mail.
Commentators are also suggesting on Beyoncé’s role in the altercation, with some bringing in body language experts, and talk show hosts have been dissecting Beyoncé’s reaction, or non-reaction, to Solange’s behavior all week.
“People have been speculating and saying, ‘Why didn’t Beyoncé get in the middle?’ In my mind, Beyoncé didn’t get in the middle because Solange was probably attacking him over something that he knows he was dead wrong about, and therefore, sister didn’t get in the middle,” talk show host Wendy Williams said on her show.
Williams goes on to say that Beyoncé’s calm demeanor suggests that Solange is prone to violent outbursts, something sources confirmed to Us Weekly.
“This is not the first time this has happened. That’s why Bey and Jay were so calm. They are used to this from Solange. It has definitely happened before,” the source said.
Yet another factor being dissected in the media is Beyoncé’s decision to leave the party with Solange while Jay Z took a separate car. Some believe that it shows that Beyoncé was more interested in protecting her sister than her husband.
Others speculate that there must be some deep conflict between the two sisters, especially considering Solange’s decision to delete all pictures of Beyoncé from her Instagram account. Beyoncé, however, has been posting photos of herself with Solange during happier times, and on Thursday, May 15, three days following the release of the surveillance video, Solange reciprocated Beyoncé’s Instagram love, posting a Throwback Thursday photo of the two as girls.
No doubt the rumors will continue to multiply as the days go on, and none of the parties involved show any signs of addressing the fight publicly any time soon.
