Xisca Perello, tennis star Rafael Nadal’s longtime girlfriend, supported from the stands as he captured his second US Open title on Monday night.
Perello met Nadal in his small Mallorcan hometown when they were both teenagers. They had met through the tennis pro’s sister Isabel, with whom Perello was close friends. Perello, who studied for a bachelor’s degree in business administration, currently works in insurance.
Unlike Andy Murray’s other half Kim Sears or Novak Djokovic’s Jelena Ristic, Perello mostly keeps out of the public eye and won’t be spotted at every tournament in which Nadal competes. “Traveling together everywhere, even if I could, would not be good either for him or for me,“ he said. “He needs his space when he is competing, and just the idea of me hanging around waiting on his needs all day wears me out. It would asphyxiate me.
“And then he would have to be worrying about me,” she continued. “No. If I followed him everywhere, I think there’s a risk we might stop getting along.”
When the two have time off, they’re often photographed boating around the waters of Mallorca or sunbathing on the beaches of their hometown with friends and family.
With Perello in the stands, Nadal earned his second US Open title and 13th Grand Slam crown after defeating Djokovic in a four-set match – 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
