Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark was crowned Miss Universe 2024 last week. She became the first Danish person to ever win the competition. The 21-year-old competed and beat over 120 contestants from 127 countries in the annual beauty pageant in Mexico City. In the final, she won out over Miss Nigeria, who was the first runner-up.
Theilvig, who was open about being a rape victim, grew up in a family with several drug addicts in a suburb of Copenhagen. In her video for the pageant, she noted she came from a “very dysfunctional family with a lot of drug addicts” and had “also been abused.”
Theilvig was not meant to be in the contest but replaced contestant Emma Heyst, who wasn’t able to compete at the kast moment. Her fellow contestants celebrated her on stage as well as supporters from all around the world, as she took the tiara from Miss Universe 2023, Sheynnis Palacios.
The event was hosted by Mario Lopez and Olivia Culpo, who was Miss Universe 2012. Robin Thicke also
performed at the finale.
The flashy pageant started off with the contestants being cut down to 30, using the results from the
preliminary event, which comprised of a colorful national costume contest.
The semi-finalists then paraded in swimwear, before 12 contestants were chosen to advance to an evening gown contest.
This year also marked the first time in the 72-year history of Miss Universe that women over 28 years
old were allowed to enter.
