Michael Sam became the first openly gay football player drafted into the NFL on Saturday, and celebrated the historic moment by kissing his boyfriend, Vito Cammisano.
Sam, 24, and Cammisano, 23, have been dating since meeting at the University of Missouri. While Sam tore it up as a defensive end on the football team, Cammisano swam for the university’s swim team before graduating in 2013. Cammisano had come out as gay to his swim team in 2011. Although it’s unknown how long the two have been dating, when Vito posted a picture of himself with Sam following his public coming out in February, a follower commented, “After all these years… it's nice to see a picture of you two.”
Prior to attending the University of Missouri, Cammisano attended Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, where he competed on the school’s swim team. He also swam for the Kansas City Blazers. A year out from college, Cammisano is now interning at Cumulus Media, the second biggest radio owner and operator in the United States.
On Saturday, Cammisano was at Sam’s side while he answered the phone call from the St. Louis Rams and learned that he’d been drafted to his home state’s squad. Following the call, Sam and Cammisano kissed passionately, and later gleefully shoved celebratory cake in each other’s faces.
Since Sam came out publicly, Cammisano has shared numerous pictures of the couple, including one in which they attended a Mizzou basketball game together on Valentine’s Day. He also shared pictures from Easter, Cinco de Mayo and their time in Santa Barbara before the draft.
