Used in emergencies, Narcan is an effective medication in reversing the effects of narcotic overdoses, reportedly saving the life of Demi Lovato earlier this week. Narcan was used by the first responders when they located the unconscious pop star.

WHAT IS NARCAN, AN EMERGENCY MEDICATION USED IN OVERDOSES?

Also known as naloxone, Narcan is applied by squirting it up one nostril. Shortly thereafter, the drug will help the patient’s breathing revert to normal in anyone who overdosed on heroin, fentanyl or prescription painkillers for 30 to 90 minutes.

According to People, an EMT insider likened Narcan to what an EpiPen is for someone in anaphylactic shock, adding, “it gives you this crazy burst of energy.” However, it doesn’t remove the opiate from your body, meaning “if you do enough of it the Narcan can wear off and your heart rate can slow down again.” So while it isn’t a long-lasting cure, it will save someone’s life in an emergency.

Moreover, one dose of Narcan might not be enough depending on the person, in which case a second dose of the medication or CPR may also be required. Thankfully, it isn’t possible to overdose on Narcan.

Complications arising from opioid addiction have become commonplace enough among people of all social standings that police officers, firefighters and sheriffs across the country keep the medication on hand. Additionally, Montgomery County, Maryland, is starting a program where first responders will leave a dose of Narcan with a patient’s family members.

Widespread availability of Narcan continues to grow as well, with chains like Walgreens now stocking the spray. Standard naloxone can cost $20 to $40, whereas a Narcan kit that includes two doses can cost $130 to $140.
