Westworld season two is set to premiere on April 22 on HBO, and the network has confirmed which characters will be making a reappearance.

WESTWORLD SPOILERS

Showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the plans for the show and about which characters will return. At the end of season one, Anthony Hopkins‘ character Dr. Ford was killed when Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) went rogue and detonated some TNT. He will certainly not be returning, but younger incarnations of the doctor will be featured.

As for the mysterious Man in Black (Ed Harris), which was revealed to be the older version of William (Jimmi Simpson), he is alive and facing a new mission this season. “He gets a bit of damage done to him, that’s for sure,” teases Harris. Both iterations of the character will come back for season two.

Programmer Elsie Hughes (Shannon Woodward) and security chief Ashley Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) also survived, despite Hughes’ disappearance at the end of season one. “They’re finally getting to experience Westworld as guests and not in the managerial halls, but I’m not sure they’re enjoying their experience,” Joy says dryly. Both are alive but not doing so great, as a tribe of Native American hosts went searching for Hughes.

Tessa Thompson‘s Charlotte Hale, “she is back and causes trouble,” Joy says. The corporate villainess “went from this controlled person playing this chess game with Ford. He takes out her king and queen in one fell swoop. Now she’s left at the mercy of the hosts like everyone else.”

Lee Sizemore, played by Simon Quarterman, was in hot water at the end of season one. The arrogant head writer for the park has become Maeve’s (Thandie Newton) hostage, making him an unwilling player in his own game.

Dolores’ father Peter Abernathy (Louis Herthum) is one of the more mysterious characters that Nolan and Joy didn’t give much information about. He was last seen being brought out of cold storage as part of Hale’s scheme to smuggle out park data. He was supposed to be put on a train, but did he leave? The showrunners share that he will be “an important asset” in the upcoming season.

Lastly, Clementine Pennyfeather, played by Angela Sarafyan, was apparently destroyed but reappeared during the season finale when she took a shot at the Man in Black. The showrunners have been quiet on this one as well, but had previously noted that her operation last season would result in a complete character change.

Tune in to HBO on April 22 for the season two premiere.
