West Wing star Bradley Whitford criticized Cheryl Hines for supporting her husband and independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. after he endorsed Donald Trump.
On August 23, Kennedy announced that he was suspending his campaign and endorsing Trump.
On the same day, Hines shared her support for her husband.
“The decision has been made to suspend my husband’s, Robert Kennedy Jr.’s, presidency, and I’d like to extend a sincere, deeply heartfelt thank you to every person who has worked so tirelessly and lovingly on his campaign,” she wrote in an X post.
“They have accomplished feats that were said to be impossible,” she added. “They have gathered over a million signatures, more than any candidate in history, and have achieved ballot access across the country despite the roadblocks and lawsuits that have been brought against them for the sole purpose of keeping Bobby off of the ballots so no one would even have the opportunity to vote for him.”
“I deeply respect the decision Bobby made to run on the principle of unity,” the actress declared. “Over the last year and a half, I have met some extraordinary people from all parties – Democrats, Republicans and Independents. It’s been my experience that the vast majority of all parties are truly good people who want the best for our country and for each other. It has been an eye-opening, transformative, and endearing journey.”
In response to Hines’ post, the independent candidate thanked her.
“I am so grateful to my amazing wife Cheryl for her unconditional love, as I made a political decision with which she is very uncomfortable,” Kennedy said in a post on Friday. “I wish this also for the country — love and unity even in the face of disagreement. We will need that in coming times.”
The next day, Whitford slammed Hines for praising her husband’s decision.
“Hey @CherylHines, way to stay silent while your lunatic husband throws his support behind the adjudicated rapist who brags about stripping women of their fundamental rights,” the actor wrote on X. “Gutsy. Great example for the kids. Profile in courage.”
Kennedy has struggled to raise money for his campaign for the past month.
Two weeks ago, Justice Christina L. Ryba ruled that he could not appear on the New York State presidential ballot after a lawsuit claimed that his ballot nomination petition listed a residence in Katonah, New York. At the same time, he has lived in the Los Angeles area since 2014.
The suit alleges that Kennedy “at most only visited” the residence in Katonah.
