As television personality Wendy Williams celebrated her 60th birthday on July 18, her family has continued to remain steadfastly supportive, despite the significant obstacles they face to maintain contact with her.
Williams’ loved ones are reportedly “rooting and praying” for her as she grapples with her diagnoses of frontotemporal dementia and aphasia. However, the Williams family has largely been “denied contact” with her due to the court-ordered guardianship that currently oversees her care. This guardianship, led by Sabrina Morrissey, has been the subject of intense scrutiny, particularly after the release of the Lifetime documentary Where Is Wendy Williams?
The documentary, which aired in February, provided a glimpse into Williams’ struggles with substance abuse and its impact on her cognitive abilities. Williams’ son, Kevin Hunter Jr., revealed that his mother’s dementia had been alcohol-induced and stemmed from her long-standing battle with addiction.
Morrissey, however, has fiercely criticized the documentary, and accused Lifetime’s parent company, A+E Networks, of “humiliating” Williams by filming her in an “obviously disabled state” and “cruelly implying” that her “disoriented demeanor is due to substance abuse and intoxication.” The legal guardian has claimed that the documentary “shamelessly exploits” the media personality, a position that A+E Networks has vehemently disputed.
In February, Williams’ sister, Wanda Finnie, stated that she had not been made aware of her diagnosis after she was placed in a facility to be treated for cognitive issues. Finnie noted that the family hadn’t received information on Williams‘ diagnosis since the fall of 2021 when the star spent time in Florida.
Finnie said, “When she was in Florida, there were a number of people involved. Even beyond family, there were doctors involved, people in Wendy’s professional world that were involved… She had a health team in place, nurses in place and she had family in place. She was getting healthier.”
