Percy Hynes White, an actor in the Netflix supernatural comedy Wednesday, has stated that the sexual assault allegations made against him online were a “campaign of misinformation.” This comes months after the accusations spread on social media in January.
On an Instagram story on Tuesday, Hynes White wrote, “Earlier this year, somebody I’ve never met started a campaign of misinformation about me online. Because of this, my family has been doxxed, and my friends have received death threats.”
He continued, claiming the “rumors are false” and “the kind of baseless, harmful claims that can create mistrust toward victims.”
On January 18, a Twitter user in a since-deleted post accused Hynes White of assaulting her at a party in Toronto. She said that the actor and his friends organized parties and handed out alcohol and drugs to underage girls to have sex with them.
“He would pursue, have sex with, abuse and get my friend high who was 13/14 at the time. Last time I knew they had sex she was 16 and he was 20. He assaulted me at one of those parties awhile [sic] I was too drunk, and he had cornered and pressured and assaulted multiple of my friends,” the Twitter user alleged.
After the tweet circulated on social media, a number of similar allegations came out. As a result, hashtags such as #CancelPercy trended on Twitter, leading many fans of Wednesday to push for taking Hynes White off the show.
On Wednesday, Hynes White portrayed Xavier Thorpe, a student who has the ability to make his art come to life. He is one of the love interests of the main protagonist Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega).
On January 6, the show, as one of Netflix’s most successful series of all time, was renewed for a second season. It became the second most popular English-language season of television on Netflix, garnering over 1.2 billion hours of viewership during its first four weeks.
