Actor Timothee Chalamet made his Saturday Night Live hosting debut on December 12. In his opening monologue, Chalamet spoked about growing up in New York during the holiday season and revealed that his mother did background work on the show.
“I’ll always be a New York City kid at heart, especially at Christmas. New York, the city so nice, they named it New York!,” said the actor while sitting down at a piano to share false memories of a New York City Christmas, like sledding off the Chrysler building. SNL cast member Pete Davidson joined him at the piano to say that while growing up in the same city, a Staten Island Christmas was very different than those of the other boroughs. “We don’t leave Santa cookies,” he joked. “We leave him Bud Light and a White Claw.”
A sketch called “A Rona Family Christmas” featured Chalamet as the screwed up son of Cecily Strong and Beck Bennett, a family of the coronavirus, who has refused to infect anyone with the virus. Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang played their neighbors, the herpes virus.
The Oscar nominee showed off his impressive impersonation of Harry Styles and the audience discovered the actor could sing in a musical sketch about a tiny horse.
Colin Jost and Micheal Che‘s Weekend Update saw the return of Kate McKinnon‘s character of Dr. Weknowdis and their comments on the Pfizer vaccine. Melissa Villaseñor also dropped by during the sketch doing a musical impression of Dolly Parton, singing “Jingle Bells” in the tune of “Jolene.”
Chalamet teamed up with Davidson for the last two skits of the night. The first featured the actors playing a pair of white rappers who no one could understand when the spoke. The sketch featured a cameo from Questlove. The last sketch of the night saw the duo play Jets fanatics on a sports talk show.
During the show’s closing remarks, Chalamet wore a Legendary Entertainment branded hoodie, leading some to question if he was sending a message on behalf of the production company to WarnerMedia after the recent news that 17 of Warner’s 2021 slate of movies are going to be released on HBO Max the same day they are released in theaters, due to the impact the coronavirus pandemic had on movie theaters. Chalamet’s big-budget sci-fi film, Dune was one of the movies effected.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were Saturday Night Live’s musical guest. On December 19, Kristen Wiig will host with musical guest Dua Lipa.
