Steven Spielberg filmed his very first music video, using only his phone.
Though the iconic director has built great success in his career, being nominated for 19 Oscars and winning three of them, and directing prominent movies like Jurassic Park and Jaws, he had never shot a music video before. He directed a music video for the lead singer of Mumford and Sons, Marcus Mumford.
“On Sunday 3rd July in a high school gym in New York, Steven Spielberg directed my first music video, in one shot, on his phone,” Mumford tweeted. “Kate Capshaw was the almighty dolly grip.”
The video for Mumford’s song “Cannibal” was released on Thursday on his YouTube channel, and it has since gained more than 200,000 views. This is the artist’s first single for his upcoming album; the title is yet to be reveled. In the video Mumford is seen strumming on his guitar, sitting on a stage with black curtains as the backdrop, he preformed the entire song in one go as Spielberg moves from an establishing shot to close-ups.
The singer shared a series of photos of the music video production on Twitter, showing Spielberg sitting on a rolling chair as he was trying to get the shots.
“I’ve been overwhelmed by the support of the people around me to bring this music to you, and I cannot hope to express all of my gratitude,” Mumford wrote. “When people get it, it blows my mind. Kate and Steven just got it, and I cannot thank them enough.”
