WATCH: Snoop Dogg & Eminem’s Cringeworthy Digital VMA Concert As Their Board Ape NFTs

There were plenty of incredible performances at MTV’s Video Music Awards on Sunday, from a Nicki Minaj medley to a Bad Bunny show that went viral when he kissed a male backup dancer. The ceremony wasn’t without some duds, though which it came in the form of a collab with Eminem and Snoop Dogg to plug the metaverse and their Bored Ape NFTs.

The two rappers get transported into a digital world by way of Eminem getting a contact high from Snoop onstage, and we are then treated to clunky 3D models of the two of them on a flying stage that quickly morph into their Bored Ape avatars rapping verses.

Both Eminem and Snoop Dogg sounded fine, though seeing their Bored Apes walk jerkily around with minimal personality between sets made the show look more like an early video game cutscene than cutting-edge tech. Plus, the digitized performances lacked the infectious energy of musicians really giving their all onstage to a live crowd.

Check out their performance below if for some reason you miss low-budget animations from the 2000s, or want to see a worse version of a digital live performance that was already perfected by the band Gorillaz years ago.

Bored Ape creators Yuga Labs seem to be hawking their own take on a metaverse world. The website for their Otherside world promotes an immersive world that is built upon NFTs, and people hoping to access it will seem to have to buy in with NFT deeds that started at an extremely pricey 1.8 Ethereum ($1537.95 today 8/29).
