WATCH: Ross Chastain Goes Viral With Wall-Riding Qualifying NASCAR Move He Learned On GameCube Game

Gamers had a big win the other day when the NASCAR driver Ross Chastain managed to get a qualifying position in a big tournament in Phoenix with an absolutely insane move he later said he learned on a NASCAR game on the Nintendo GameCube.

Former wrestler and sports analyst Pat McAfee shared the truly crazy clip last week, which quickly spread to all corners of the internet. The clip shows Chastain’s red-and-black car gain a huge burst of speed as he rides along the arena’s barrier, passing several cars at almost the last minute of the race. A secret ingredient in this was activating fifth gear

This move was attempted last year by Kyle Larson, but it didn’t give him the lead he was looking for. It’s also clearly a risky strategy, with any irregularities or pronounced bumps in the border Chastain was driving on having the potential to cause a huge crash.

“I played a lot of Nascar 2005 on the GameCube,” Chastain told reporters in his post-race interview. “I never knew if it would actually work. I did that when I was eight years old.”

He said once he hit the wall, “I basically just let go of the wheel, and just hoped I didn’t catch the Turn 4 access gate or something crazy, but I was willing to do it.”

As incredible as the move looks on NBC’s cameras, several fans also uploaded footage of how the move looked from their perspective in the rafters, and it almost makes you interested in NASCAR for a second!

It remains to be seen whether this strategy will become more popular in upcoming tournaments because of the viral factor, and it hasn’t been outlawed by race officials.

Thanks to his insane move, you’ll be able to see Chastain compete for the NASCAR Cup Series championship at Phoenix raceway.

The other qualifying drivers are Joey LoganoChristopher Bell and Chase Elliott.
