Prince performed one of the best Super Bowl halftime shows in history during Super Bowl XLI.

Prince Super Bowl

In 2007, Prince was tapped to headline the halftime show at the Super Bowl, which took place at Dolphins Stadium that year. The day of the game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Chicago Bears, Miami had a massive rain storm. And Prince embraced the inclement weather.

Prince wasn’t performing at halftime to promote his own music, and so played familiar rock songs, singing, “We Will Rock You”, “Let’s Go Crazy”, “Baby I’m a Star”, “Proud Mary”, “All Along the Watchtower” and “Best of You.”

“I’m outside smoking a cigarette with [Rush drummer] Neil Peart and someone sticks their head outside and goes, ‘Uh, dude, Prince is doing your song,'” Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins said of “Best Of You.” “I have no idea why he did it, but I’d love to find out. I mean, the thought went through my head that maybe he was doing it as a sort of ‘f–k you’ to us, or maybe he really likes the song. Either way, it was pretty amazing to have a guy like Prince covering one of our songs — and actually doing it better than we did.”

Prince went on to fittingly close the performance with “Purple Rain.”

Prince died Thursday at age 57. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.
