In Emeryville, California, a masked thief was captured stealing 50 iPhones from an Apple Store in broad daylight.
The alleged thief, identified as 22-year-old Tyler Mims, was videoed taking iPhones from their displays and stuffing them into his pockets. Mims wore all black but stood out with his red sneakers. According to authorities, the total of all the iPhones was $49,230.
The person recording the video closely followed Mims and captured him walking past a police car before leaving in a black Hyundai. Footage of the incident has then spread to multiple social media platforms including TikTok and X. No witnesses were injured.
Emeryville police announced that its detectives, Berkeley Police Department and California Highway Patrol worked together to make three arrests related to the Apple Store theft. Mims was one of the three arrested.
Authorities charged Mims with three counts of conspiracy to commit a crime, burglary, grand theft and organized retail theft.
Reports say the store Mims robbed had closed for several months in 2023 but reopened in January. Concerns about robberies and heightened criminal activity in the Bay Area have grown over the past few months.
Last year, San Francisco recalled its district attorney, Chesa Boudin, in part due to his failure to charge shoplifting crimes.
